Penile Implants for Erectile Dysfunction
Overview
Penile implant surgery is a highly effective and permanent treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction (ED) who do not respond to medications or non-surgical therapies. It restores the ability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse, helping men regain confidence, intimacy, and quality of life.
At our center, penile implant surgery is performed by an experienced urologist using advanced techniques and high-quality prostheses, ensuring safety, discretion, and excellent outcomes.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile Dysfunction is the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection adequate for sexual activity. Common causes include:
- Diabetes mellitus
- Hypertension and heart disease
- Nerve injury (post-prostate surgery, spinal injury)
- Hormonal imbalance
- Aging
- Psychological factors
- Failure of oral ED medications or injections
When conservative treatments fail, penile implant surgery becomes the most reliable option.
What Is a Penile Implant?
A penile implant (penile prosthesis) is a medical device surgically placed inside the penis to allow a man to have an erection whenever desired. The implant is completely internal and not visible externally.
Penile implants do not affect sensation, ejaculation, or orgasm.
Types of Penile Implants
1. Inflatable Penile Implant (IPP)
The most advanced and commonly used option.
Components:
- Two inflatable cylinders inside the penis
- A pump placed in the scrotum
- A fluid reservoir placed in the lower abdomen
How It Works:
- The pump is squeezed to transfer fluid into the cylinders, creating an erection
- Pressing the release valve returns the penis to a flaccid state
Advantages:
- Most natural-looking erection
- Flaccid state when not in use
- High patient satisfaction
- Excellent cosmetic results
2. Malleable (Semi-Rigid) Penile Implant
Description:
- Bendable rods placed inside the penis
Advantages:
- Simpler surgery
- Lower cost
- Easy to use
- Suitable for elderly or medically high-risk patients
Limitation:
Penis remains semi-rigid at all times
Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Penile Implants?
Penile implant surgery is recommended for men who:
- Have severe or long-standing ED
- Do not respond to oral medications (PDE-5 inhibitors)
- Have failed injection therapy or vacuum devices
- Have ED after prostate surgery
- Have diabetes-related ED
- Have penile fibrosis or Peyronie’s disease with ED
- Desire a permanent, dependable solution
